ELKHORN CITY HERITAGE COUNCIL

"A community should be a lot of people striving toward a common good; this would include cultural as well as material services that would satisfy the needs of many and characterize a modern age with a deep concern for the past. A community should accept the concept of the American dream"

The Elkhorn City Area Heritage Council Inc., a non-profit civic organization, was officially incorporated on Feb. 9, 1999. The mission of the council is to protect and preserve the history, culture, and natural beauty of the Elkhorn city Area.

In addition to Between Land and Water, several projects are completed or underway by the HCAHC:

The Elkhorn City Cemetery Project: Inventory and mapping of unmarked graves and the development of family information relating to those buried in the cemetery that has graves dating to 1814. Heritage Council members recently produced a play in the cemetery with Louise Smith, professor at Antioch College.

Archives Project: Collection of photos, old letters, manuscripts, books, genealogical records, tape recording, legal documents, military records, or other memorabilia, to construct a visual history of the region. Heritage Council members are working with others on maintaining and developing a Railroad Museum.

Potter Flats Proposal: the Heritage Council has drafted a proposal for the development of the Potter Flats area, including improved access to the historical site and a Pioneer Village.

Russell River Projects: The Heritage Council has worked on developing beach access and a walkway along the Russell Fork River. They are working with Appalshop and public artists to enhance this site with the Between Land and Water Project
