RIVER POCKET PARKS

Three pocket parks will link parts of a walking trail along the south bank of the Russell River, across two bridges, and down the Main Street of town. Each park consists of seating made of granite boulders and poured concrete with text from local residents reminiscing about the river; plantings of trees and bushes; and markers made of tile and text. A recurring motive is the growth of plants between slices in the asphalt and the use of mixed scale regional granite, as gravel and as boulders.

#1 Park - Caboose and Beach access: A red caboose permanently parked on an asphalt parking lot on the corner of Russell Street and South Center Streets is the site of the largest park, which extends east along the riverbank and west under the Cantrell Bridge. This is an extension of the River Walk with bird houses already launched by Elkhorn City. River grasses and riparian native trees and bushes will be planted on the hillside and a small pre-existing park near the Caboose will be expandedaboose and Beach access

#2 Park - south Entrance to Trestle Bridge: This asphalt covered driveway leading to the Trestle Bridge from the south will be carved and the resulting holes planted with shrubbery, grasses, and native trees. The stone and concrete bench motif will be repeated.

#3 Park - north Entrance to Trestle Bridge: This terraced area will be planted by Heritage Council members as a second phase of the project, providing an entryway to the Railroad Museum
